Chester Named the UK’s Third-Best Dog-Friendly City for a Day Out

If your dog hears the word “walk” and is already waiting at the door before you have found their lead, then Chester is a very good place to be.

The city has recently been named the UK’s third-best destination for a dog-friendly day out in new research from Tails.com. York claimed first place, Bath came second, and Chester followed with a score of 42.74.

Tails.com compared 46 UK towns and cities using ten measures, from walking routes and green spaces to dog-friendly cafés, restaurants and shops. Chester stood out with 50 dog-friendly restaurants, 20 cafés and 10 pet shops. That leaves plenty of choice for a quick coffee, a long lunch or a full day of exploring.

Of course, a day out deserves a little preparation. If photographs, lunch plans or a stroll through the city are on the agenda, it is always nice to head out with your dog looking fresh, feeling comfortable and ready to attract a few admiring glances.

Start With a Stroll Around Hoole

Hoole is a lovely place to begin. Faulkner Street and Charles Street have a friendly neighbourhood feel, with plenty happening without the pace of the city centre.

Poco, the small-plates restaurant and bar on Faulkner Street, welcomes dogs and offers a relaxed stop for food or a drink. You may have even spotted a few of our freshly groomed familiar faces in there already!

Alexandra Park is close by if your dog needs a little walk before settling down. It can be a handy way to let them sniff, stretch their legs and use up some energy before moving into busier parts of Chester.

A dog who has had a recent groom may look ready for a day around town, but comfort matters just as much. Neatly maintained fur around the feet, face and hygiene areas can help keep them comfortable once the walking, sitting and inevitable investigation of every interesting smell begins.

A Dog-Friendly Wander Through Chester

From Hoole, it is easy to continue towards the centre or head for one of Chester’s quieter walking spots.

Grosvenor Park gives dogs and owners some breathing room close to the city. The River Dee is nearby, offering a scenic waterside walk before heading back towards the shops and cafés.

Not every dog wants to spend hours among crowds. Confident dogs may be perfectly happy on busy streets. Puppies, nervous dogs and those who become overwhelmed easily may enjoy an earlier visit, a shorter route or a few quiet breaks.

Chester BID lists places such as Cinderbox Coffee, Shrub and Brewhouse & Kitchen among its dog-friendly venues. Policies can change, so if you're not sure, check with each business before setting off, but most have a sign in the shop window. Finding a quieter table away from doors and busy walkways may help your dog settle once you arrive.

Some dogs are even allowed in general retail shops - Rohan on Bridge Street, Lush on Foregate Street, and even Picturehouse in Exchange Square are just a few spots you can shop with your pup, or take in a film with dog-friendly screenings!

Water, waste bags and a lead are the basics. A familiar mat can be useful for dogs who like having their own place to settle. If your plans cross their normal mealtime, bring their usual food rather than relying on unfamiliar treats throughout the day.

Get Them Looking Ready for Chester

Nobody expects a dog to stay spotless for long, particularly during autumn. Wet paths, muddy grass and fallen leaves tend to have other plans.

Longer, curly and double coats can collect moisture and debris around the legs, feet, chest and underside. Starting the day with a clean, brushed coat makes it easier to spot leaves, seeds and new tangles when you return home. It can make drying much quicker too.

Once you are home, gently towel the coat, check between the paw pads and remove anything caught in the fur. Avoid pulling a brush through damp knots, which can tug at the skin and make brushing unpleasant.

If your dog needs a freshen-up before their Chester outing, a Bath & Tidy may be enough. This can include a wash, brush and attention around the face, feet and hygiene areas. Dogs needing a haircut, deeper coat care or deshedding may be more suited to a Full Groom.
