Your dog’s grooming appointment can be a lovely excuse to treat yourself too. A coffee, a slice of cake, a catch-up over lunch or a browse around the shops can turn an everyday appointment into a rather pleasant few hours.
Once you have collected your freshly groomed companion, you might want to enjoy a little outing together before heading home. They do have a smart new look to show off, after all!
Yappy Paws is based in Thornton-le-Moors, near Chester, with plenty of places to eat, shop and explore nearby. Laura has shared some of her local suggestions to help you plan your visit.
Just agree your collection time with us before setting off and keep your phone handy. Then you can enjoy your break knowing when to head back.
Coffee, cake and a spot of lunch
Hayrack Church Farm and its butchers
You do not have to leave Thornton-le-Moors to find somewhere for a bite to eat. Hayrack Church Farm has a café serving meals, snacks and cakes, making it a handy stop during your dog’s appointment, literally around the corner - you'll struggle to miss it when you drop off your dog!
If you have children with you and enough time available, the farm park could give them something to enjoy too.
The butchers shop offers another useful reason to pop in. Pick up something for dinner, and you can tick a job off your list before collecting your dog. The café, farm park and butchers have separate opening arrangements, so check the part you want to visit.
Ask Hayrack about dog access if you are planning to return together after the groom.
Café on the Hill in Dunham-on-the-Hill
An earlier grooming appointment could pair nicely with breakfast at Café on the Hill. This family-run café on Chester Road serves breakfasts, sandwiches, cakes and hot food, giving you plenty of choice.
Perhaps you have been meaning to meet a friend for a proper catch-up. Here is your excuse to get it in the diary.
The café advertises itself as dog-friendly, so it is an option for a stop after collection too. Its published hours are 9am to 2pm, with last orders at 1.30pm.
The Hornsmill at Helsby
If your appointment leaves enough time for a leisurely lunch, The Hornsmill at Helsby is worth a look.
On Chester Road in Hapsford, the pub opens from noon and serves a range of meals. You could meet someone for lunch or enjoy having a meal cooked for you for a change.
Leave enough time to order, eat and return for collection. If your dog will be joining you afterwards, ask about suitable seating when you book.
The Chester Fields
The Chester Fields near Bridge Trafford is another place on our list for a sit-down lunch.
Make it a catch-up with a friend, a lunch date or simply a chance to take a break. Sometimes having someone else take care of lunch is quite enough of a treat.
Check the current menu and table availability before visiting. For an outing after collection, confirm the restaurant’s dog seating arrangements when booking.
A browse around the shops
Cheshire Oaks and Digby & Champ
A grooming appointment can be a handy opportunity to visit a few shops at Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet. You might have something particular to pick up, or simply enjoy seeing what catches your eye.
For a visit after collection, the centre welcomes well-behaved dogs on leads. Look for the paw-print signs in store windows to see which shops welcome them inside.
Digby & Champ has a location at Cheshire Oaks selling dog treats and accessories. You could choose something during the groom or browse together afterwards. Your dog may be more interested in this stop than your search for a new pair of shoes!
Jollyes in Ellesmere Port
Running low on dog food, or has a favourite toy seen better days? Jollyes at the Port Arcades in Ellesmere Port could help you tick a few pet supplies off your list.
It is a useful errand to fit around an appointment, particularly if you know what you need. Check stock beforehand for a particular item, and ask the branch about access if you plan to visit with your dog after collection.
Neptune Chester
For anyone who enjoys looking at furniture and home accessories, Neptune Chester in Bridge Trafford offers a different sort of browse.
You might be gathering ideas for a room or looking for a finishing touch for your home. There is plenty of enjoyment in having a look without needing to make a big purchase.
The showroom lists dog-friendly access, so it may suit a visit together after grooming. If you want detailed advice about a project, arrange enough time for that separately.
Costco Chester
Existing Costco members could use the appointment for a shopping trip to the Chester warehouse at Dunkirk Trading Estate.
Go armed with your list and leave a little room for the checkout before collection. Whether everything in your trolley was on that original list is another matter!
Check the entry conditions and opening hours for your membership before setting off.
Plants and something tasty in Ledsham
Premier Plants of Ledsham combines a browse around the garden centre with a visit to Sprout Kitchen Garden.
You could pick up some inspiration for your garden, then settle down for coffee or food. It is a pleasant option if you enjoy looking around at your own pace. Check Sprout’s kitchen hours if lunch is part of your plan.
For visits after grooming, pet dogs must be safely placed in a trolley at Premier Plants, and the same rule applies to Sprout. Assistance dogs are exempt. Check whether that arrangement will work comfortably for your dog before planning a visit together.
A little exploring at the boat museum
If you would like to do something different, the National Waterways Museum on South Pier Road in Ellesmere Port offers historic boats, dock buildings and exhibitions to explore.
Its Waterside Café gives you somewhere to pause for a drink or something to eat. Friendly dogs are welcome on leads, making the museum a possibility for an outing after collection too.
The museum suggests allowing around two to three hours for a full visit. Give yourself time to enjoy it, or ask about café access if you are hoping for a shorter stop.
Make the most of your next visit
A coffee and cake, a useful shopping trip or an afternoon out together can all add something enjoyable to grooming day.
Choose a stop that fits your appointment, check current opening hours and leave enough time to return for collection. Afterwards, follow your dog’s lead: they might enjoy a gentle outing, or be ready to head home and put their paws up.
To arrange your next appointment, contact Yappy Paws with your dog’s breed, age and grooming needs. Laura will be happy to discuss a suitable visit to the Thornton-le-Moors salon.
