If you’ve never booked your dog in for a full groom before, it’s completely normal to feel a little unsure about what actually happens during the appointment.

Will your dog be okay? How long does it take? What’s included?

Let’s walk through it step by step so you know exactly what to expect—and can feel confident your dog is in safe hands.

Step 1: A Friendly Welcome & Initial Check

Every groom starts with a quick check-over.

This includes:

  • Looking at your dog’s coat condition

  • Checking for any matting or tangles

  • Noting any sensitive areas or skin issues

  • Getting a feel for your dog’s temperament

It’s all about making sure the groom is tailored to your dog—not rushed or one-size-fits-all.

Step 2: Brush Out & De-Matting

Before any water comes into play, your dog’s coat is brushed through.

This helps to:

  • Remove loose hair

  • Ease out small tangles

  • Identify any tighter mats

If there is heavier matting, it may need to be carefully clipped out to avoid discomfort.

Step 3: Bath Time

Next comes the bath—often a dog’s favourite (or least favourite!) part.

Your dog will be washed using shampoos suited to their coat and skin type, helping to remove:

  • Dirt and debris

  • Excess oils

  • Odours

This leaves the coat clean, fresh, and ready for the next stage.

Step 4: Drying

Drying is more important than people expect.

Typically, this includes:

  • Towel drying first

  • Followed by a controlled grooming dryer

This helps fluff the coat, making it easier to cut and style properly.

Step 5: Clipping, Trimming & Styling

This is where your dog starts to look like themselves again—just a little more polished!

Depending on your preference and your dog’s breed, this may include:

  • Full body clipping

  • Breed-specific styling

  • Face, paws, and hygiene trims

  • Tail shaping

Step 6: Nails, Ears & Final Touches

To finish things off, your dog will usually have:

  • Nails trimmed

  • Ears cleaned

  • A final brush and tidy

It’s all the little details that make a big difference.

How Long Does It Take?

Most full grooms take between 1 to 2 hours.

However, this depends entirely on:

  • Your dog’s size

  • Coat condition

  • Behaviour and comfort levels

Some dogs need a bit more time - and that’s absolutely fine.

If you get in touch with us to book, we can advise on roughly the price and time involved - but rest assured, we treat every dog with the love, care and attention they deserve!

What If My Dog Is Nervous?

This is a big concern for many owners, especially first-time visitors.

A good grooming experience is calm, patient, and never rushed. Breaks can be given if needed, and everything is done at your dog’s pace.

Many dogs that start off unsure quickly settle once they realise it’s not as scary as they thought!

A Fresh, Happy Dog at the End

By the end of the appointment, you’ll have a dog that:

  • Looks tidy and well-groomed

  • Smells fresh

  • Feels more comfortable

And yes… probably gets a lot of compliments on the way home!
